Floor coatings

Floor coatings, for example on garages, industrial floors or kitchens are not only important for their visual appearance. These floors can be permanently protected against mechanical damage and the penetration of liquids with colored protective coatings.

Floor coatings which are exposed to moderate stresses

Concrete floors exposed to moderate stresses are ideally and easily coated with the decorative floor sealant KOSTER EM-VS. The coating is applied in two layers onto the prepared and cleaned concrete surface.

The surface protection of walls is easily done with KOSTER Silicone Paint White.

Always adhere to the specifications in the respective Technical Guidelines.

Floor coatings which are exposed to heavy stresses

Concrete floors which are exposed to heavy stresses are coated with KOSTER LF-VL. KOSTER LF-VL is applied to the prepared, dry, sound and solid substrate free of loose particles and bond inhibiting substances. By mixing KOSTER LF-VL with quartz sand the coating achieves a high mechanical strength.

Moisture Mitigation System

Moisture penetration through concrete slabs can cause severe problems for subsequent flooring systems. High concentrations of moisture and alkalinity (levels determined through testing) can lead to the deterioration of flooring adhesives and delamination of coatings by osmotic action. Even with relatively low moisture emissions (MVER), elevated alkalinity can compromise even the toughest flooring system adhesives. To avoid this problem the concrete slab should be primed with a material that will tightly bond to the concrete under these very adverse conditions.

KOSTER VAP I® 2000 is a special material which fulfils all of these functions; it has very low permeance (ASTM E96 wet: .04-.09), excellent bonding characteristics and is resistant to sustained high alkalinity (pH of 14). The KOSTER VAP I® 2000 vapor reduction system is applied to shot blasted, solid concrete substrates that are free of bond inhibiting substances. After curing, a covering layer (i.e. KOSTER LF-VL) or any other type of final flooring may be applied. If an underlayment is required use KOSTER VAP I® Finish together with KOSTER VAP I® 06 Primer on top of the moisture mitigation system.

Always adhere to the specifications in the respective Technical Guidelines.

Moisture Mitigation System with Isolation Barrier

KOSTER VAP I® 2000 protects flooring systems against moisture and high alkalinity. For more than 16 years, this system has been successfully installed under all types of flooring to guard against osmotic blisters and other deleterious effects caused by moisture and / or high alkalinity.

Concrete floors which contain water soluble, unreacted sodium and / or potassium silicates usually can not be coated when certain thresholds of these compounds are exceeded. These unreacted silicates may come from a number of sources such as a floor hardeners, concrete polishing, integral additives, and some vapor reduction systems and may act as a bond breaker to any subsequently applied flooring system. In these cases the KOSTER IB (Isolation Barrier) is applied to the concrete first in order to create an isolation barrier between substrate and the moisture mitigation system. The KOSTER IB has self leveling properties which make it easy to apply. KOSTER VAP I®2000 is then applied on top of the cured isolation barrier. The special chemistry of the KOSTER IB provides a permanent barrier against elevated levels of alkaline salts and concrete background moisture.

The prepared concrete substrate is edged using hand grinders with dust collection capabilities, the main floor is shot blasted to a “medium shot blast (CSP 4)” to remove all loose dust, old coatings, patch material, debris and any other deleterious or bond inhibiting substances. The floor is then cleaned of all fugitive shot and all residual dust is vacuumed up. The KOSTER IB is applied to the concrete substrate at a spread rate determined by the moisture drive and level of contaminates identified in the substrate. After a 24 hour cure time the KOSTER IB is then “brush blasted” to a “light shot blast (CSP 2)”. After residual shot and dust clean up, the KOSTER VAP 2000 may be applied at the previously established spread rate as determined by moisture testing. Concrete floors which were formerly not suitable to receive a moisture mitigation system can now be coated and made fully accessible for any type of subsequent flooring system.

Always adhere to the specifications in the respective Technical Guidelines.

Oil Remediation System

KOSTER ORS is an oil-remediation and containment treatment process to rehabilitate and rescue oil or hydrocarbon contaminated concrete surfaces making them suitable to receive any type of flooring system. The KOSTER Oil Remediation System (ORS) consists of two components:

- A cleaning system using a special detergent, KOSTER ORS-D;
- An oil resistant primer coating, KOSTER ORS-C, with a sand broadcast.

The KOSTER ORS-D has the ability to penetrate deeply into the concrete surface to extract oil and hydrocarbon based compounds leaving a clean surface for the ORS-C coating. Both products combine to provide a dry, uncontaminated surface which is fit to receive flooring / coating systems.

Always adhere to the specifications in the respective Technical Guidelines.
